How soon can I get married?

How soon can I get married?

In Australian states and territories, you need to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) at least one month before your wedding date to a marriage celebrant.  So, the soonest you can marry is one month after lodging this form.

There are some circumstances when a shortening of time can be applied for. You will have to meet one of the exceptional circumstances and pay a fee and apply to The Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages Victoria (if you are marrying in Victoria).

Once completed, the NOIM is valid for 18 months. It’s ok if you have to change the date of your wedding, but if it is 18 months or more after you first filled out the NOIM, you will need to complete another.

On the NOIM, you'll be asked to fill in your conjugal status to show whether you've been married before. Fill in your status as:

Never validly married: if you've never been married or your marriage was annulled. (Don't use 'single' as it doesn't indicate whether you've been married before.)

Divorced: if you've been married and divorced.

Divorce pending: if you have commenced divorce proceedings to end your marriage.

Widowed: if you've been married and your spouse passed away.
